At least, that's what I did over July 4th weekend, abandoning my wife with our toddler and newborn baby (thanks Shahla!) for the opportunity to talk honey and share a meal with the iconic environmental activist in Kigoma on Lake Tanganyika. Jane was passing through on her way to Gombe, where she had first arrived in 1960 at age 26, without a college degree and accompanied by her mother, to change humanity's understanding of ourselves forever. Dr. Jane Goodall at dinner Shortly after arriving in Kigoma, I naturally wound up in the kitchen. Our host and I picked a few recipes from the Jane Goodall Institute's vegan cookbook: ribbons of purple carrots, macerated with honey, local lemon juice, Wild Mountain Cumin and Herati Saffron; grain salad with fresh herbs and a handful of Cured Sumac; pasta with pesto made from local cashews and lots of Zanzibar Black Peppercorns. Photo by Praise Precious Amani It was my second trip this year partnering with Upendo Honey, a social enterprise collecting rich, intense honey from the surrounding Miombo woodlands, a vast area 1/3 the size of the United States, with incredible biodiversity of plants and animals including some of the last remaining wild chimpanzees. Photo by Praise Precious Amani The honey, from log hives in the treetops, has pollen from 28 different flowering plants, and is complex, fruity and surprisingly potent. The Amber Honey is malty and floral, the Dark is tart and tannic; and the Smoked is halfway to barbecue sauce, with light smokiness from the woodsmoke used to calm the bees during harvesting. Photo by Praise Precious Amani These fragile woodlands are under threat, but honey could offer a solution: by sustainably managing wild beehives, local communities make good money and protect the ecosystem. I say "could" because today, the success of this project depends on us, and on you. Dr. Jane Goodall with Zesco This year, Jane turned 90. She travels 300 days a year, urging for environmental protection at concerts and conferences. Our Woodland Honey project represents a new style of advocacy, a delicious and unique commercial product that we hope will find a wide audience eager to help protect the Miombo woodlands and the humans and other animals who call them home. Co-founder Ethan with Dr. Jane Goodall On this Giving Tuesday, please think about where your money goes when you buy gifts for friends and family.  As Jane herself says, “You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” Please spend your hard-earned money wisely, support important work, and help save our planet.
