https://www2.beverlyhillsmd.com/cid/701Vo00000IUJ2vIAH?utm_term=aid_141_cid__cntid_ It’s Groundhog Day, s! Whether or not ol’ Punxatawnee Phil sees his shadow, one thing is for sure: We still have a lot of winter left — even here in LA. And sadly, these chilly temps can spell BIG trouble for your skin: Flakiness, irritation, redness, even sagging or grayish complexion… Or as I like to call it, the “Winter Rut.” So today, let’s review the Do’s and Don’ts that can break you OUT of the winter rut… Because it IS possible to have glowy, silky soft skin even in crazy cold climates! Let’s dive in.DO: Flood your skin with moisture at night Dry, flaky skin is practically impossible to avoid in colder months. And because your skin produces less oil as you age, it becomes much harder to retain water… Which leaves your skin paper-thin and FAR more susceptible to wrinkles and sagging. The best way to ramp up your skin’s moisture is by adding a facial oil… AND swapping your lighter moisturizer for a heavier, cream-based option. You’ll want to opt for formulas with nourishing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or ceramides. These hydrating heavy hitters are an easy way to make your skin look more dewy and supple overnight… But here’s the trick. Apply your facial oil BEFORE your moisturizer (that way, it can really sink into your skin)... And then wait at least 1 hour before laying down in bed for maximum absorption. Otherwise, you run the risk of the product rubbing off onto your pillowcase, which can attract bacteria and dirt particles… And can make your skin more irritated and “angry” when you wake up. Which brings me to my next point:DON’T: Over-exfoliate It can be VERY tempting to do extra exfoliating when your skin starts to flake. This is a giant mistake, because it can strip away your natural oils super fast and disrupt your skin barrier… And all that irritation can lead to redness, painful tightening, and increased sensitivity. Not only that, it can leaves your skin at risk for environmental damage, hyperpigmentation, and uneven skin tone. That said, some exfoliation can do wonders for removing dead skin and buildup. Stick to once a week using a gentle exfoliator like glycolic or lactic acid. But if you have over-exfoliated, don’t worry — I have just the ticket:DO: Make a DIY humidifier Because cold air holds less moisture, it can make your dry skin go from bad to worse — especially when you crank up the heat. So in addition to moisturizing your skin, I highly recommend re-moisturizing the air itself. Of course, humidifiers do exactly that — but if you don’t have one, you can actually make one right at home… And it’s SUPER simple! All you have to do is place a bowl or pot filled with water in a room with no lid, which allows the water to naturally evaporate into the air. To increase the evaporation rate, you can even add a few drops of essential oil to the water or place the bowl near a heat source like a radiator. (But not too close!) The best time to do this is at night. That way, you can stick the bowl right by your bed, and your skin can drink in all that extra moisture overnight. I’ve used this trick in a pinch and it did wonders for my dry, chapped skin — it even helps me sleep! You’ll be amazed at how soothed and dewy your skin feels with the extra moisture. And if you really want to protect your skin this winter…DON’T: Skip sunscreen Yep, even in winter months, your skin is at risk for sunburns, especially if you live in snowy areas… Because even on cloudy days, fresh snow can reflect up to 80% of UV rays — which can DOUBLE your sun exposure!1 So even if it looks gloomy out, it’s suuuper important to lather up on a good SPF (aim for 30 or higher) on exposed areas like your face, lips, and hands. You can also wear protective clothing, wear sunglasses, and limit your outdoor activities if you’re extra sensitive. Alright, I saved the best for last…DO: Remember to smile ☺️  Winter can be tough for a lot of us… The dark skies, the freezing temps — the days can really start to blend together. I’ve talked before about how much smiling can boost happiness AND the look of your skin. When I’m feeling bogged down by the seemingly endless season, I make extra effort to carve a little “me time” out of my day. Sometimes, it’s going for a walk. Other times, it’s having a tasty lunch from my favorite restaurant. Whatever brings you joy, make time for it! Acts of self-care help to minimize cortisol levels, which is the hormone that plays a huge role in creating wrinkles. So basically, feeling happier can lead to a healthier, more radiant complexion. Plus, you’ll get a release of "feel-good" hormones like dopamine and serotonin — so it's a win-win.Okay, that about does it! I really hope you found this helpful, name. If you follow this guide, I have no doubt you’ll notice your skin looking more soft, supple, and bright. And that can make all the difference as you move about your day. Because dry, itchy, flaky skin doesn’t just look unsightly, it’s also uncomfortable… So just imagine how much more confident you’d feel waking up with a silky-soft radiant glow. Take care and I’ll talk to you soon!
