Create a Colorful Bulb Lawn | Want to enjoy a bright burst of early springtime color at your house next spring and simultaneously provide nectar and much-needed sustenance for pollinators? Plant your lawn with small, early-flowering bulbs this fall. Because these bulbs all flower before leaves appear on trees and shrubs, they get plenty of sunshine when they need it.
There are plenty of advantages to planting bulbs in your lawn. Gardeners and homeowners need only plant the bulbs once. They spread gradually in a site they like, expanding their show year after year with no effort from you. The bulbs blossom in the earliest weeks of spring. The foliage is slight and grass-like, and it goes dormant without a fuss, fading into the grass with no deadheading needed. Begin mowing after the foliage is spent. (This generally means you can skip the lawn mower chores for a few weeks in early spring.)
It's best to plant the bulbs in places where there is no foot traffic in early spring and in an arrangement that’s easy to mow around. A sunny slope is ideal. The majority of bulbs you’ll find below appreciate soil with good drainage. Only Fritillaria meleagris prefers conditions that are slightly damp. These bulbs are also excellent choices for underplanting trees and shrubs. |
