He got an inside look into the production process of their Italia frames, toured their new painting facility, got some quality gravel miles on a Racemax Italia bike, ate some mind-bogglingly-delicious pasta, and learned all about what makes 3T’s "Italia" frames truly special. [3T's Factory in Bergamo] [3T Builders Working on Frames & Forks] 3T’s “Italia” models are the pinnacle of their offering of bikes and framesets. What separates them from 3T's other bicycles is that they are handmade in Italy using a technique called filament winding, a unique process for composite frame creation. The thick fiber filaments are woven back and forth over molds to create the tube sections, which are then hand-joined together before being bonded and injected with resin to fill the remaining space. This is clearly visible in the special edition Project-X colorways, which are only treated with a clear coat. [Early Stages of the Filament Winding Process] [A Special Edition Project-X Frameset Showing the Weave] Without getting too bogged down in the science-behind-the-magic, what the interconnected filament winding process means for the rider is that the Italia frames are super-responsive, super-light, and super-durable. As an added bonus, the use of dry carbon fiber filament is significantly less toxic than traditional production methods. After 3T complete the frames and subject them to a rigorous inspection process, they take them across town to their WePaint facility, where a team of talented artisans put on the finishing touches. One of 3T’s mantras is “we dream, we build, we ride.” Every person whose hands go into making the Italia frames echoes the passion behind this sentiment. [Frames Getting Painted] [Bertrand's Loaner Exploro Racemax Italia in It's Native Habitat] In addition to looking absolutely stunning, the Italia bikes ride like a dream, Bertrand reports: "My Racemax was perfectly snappy and wildly fun. It handled the back-alley cobbles, chunky singletrack, muddy vineyards and paved connectors with ease. I still have a grin on my face over a month afterwards, and seriously wish I could have taken the bike home with me." 3T have been ahead of their time since they began making bicycle frames. The original 2016 Exploro had roadie-inspired geometry, was aero-optimized, and could clear 27.5x2.1” tires at a time when 47mm was still the upper end of the “road-plus” revolution. It’s been eight years since the Exploro first rocked the gravel market — and while there are no wrong choices in their lineup of bikes, their revolutionary in-house production process for the Italia frames once again puts them ahead of the curve. And if an Italia model isn't in your budget, we have an incredible selection of 3T Exploro & Strada models on sale right now up to 40% off, so there's never been a better time to find out what makes these bikes special.
