California’s Central Coast has made quite a name for itself with its bold reds and we found you a great pick: The Pessimist. Located in West Paso Robles, the brothers Daniel and Georges Daou are heavily influenced by Old World craftsmanship, but there is nothing traditional about this proprietary blend.
The Pessimist is a powerful blend of 60% Petite Sirah, with Zinfandel, Syrah, and a splash of Lagrein, a grape native to Italy’s Alto Adige region. The result is intensely aromatic, with intoxicating notes of dark berries layered with cocoa and tobacco. A vibrant palate of cherry and pomegranate follows, culminating in an elegant and silky finish—the balance here is excellent. With a 92-point rating from Wine Enthusiast, it’s a solid choice at a great price, but don’t just take our word for it. Pick this up by the case!
