Some 'M4 meat, TB5 explanation' and closing: It's been a very bus week for Apple. I don't need to cover their earnings or Apple Intelligence. We've posted on new M4 'super mini' Mac mini, iMacs, and MacBook Pro. So, how about I take a few bits to dive deeper into Thunderbolt 5 on most of these new Macs. Backwards and forwards compatibility continues. Everything that's Thunderbolt 40Gbs (3/4) works beautifully on Macs with Thunderbolt 5... and any TB3/4 40Gb/s equipped Mac that can run MacOS 15 (a requirement for TB5 compatibility) can utilize Thunderbolt 5 peripherals (at Thunderbolt 40Gb/s speed). OWC Thunderbolt 5 Cables are now available up 1.0M length from $19.99 and are universal no matter what host or device you are connecting USB-C to USB-C, just like our Thunderbolt 4 Cables from $18.99 up to 2.0M, except officially certified for up to Thunderbolt 5 Speeds. BTW, our remaining 0.7M to 1.0M TB4 Cables - they 'unofficially' officially do Thunderbolt 5 perfectly too. Also, at this point - only Thunderbolt 3 & 4 cables are available in lengths over 1.0M do not go past 40Gb/s. Base M4 Macs include Thunderbolt 40Gb/s (which is TB3/TB4) and all the new Pro and Max models take you to Thunderbolt 5. Thunderbolt 5 does not displace, replace, or obsolete Thunderbolt 3 or 4. Thunderbolt 5 is a continuation of the USB-C Thunderbolt interface that we've enjoyed since the first 2016 MacBook Pros. Thunderbolt 5 solutions are a perfect complement in the mix with Thunderbolt 3 and 4 and the entire Thunderbolt 40Gb/s to 120Gb/s ecosystem, providing more options and capability than ever. High-end thunderbolt 5 devices, like our OWC Envoy Ultra - first in world bus-powered TB5 SSD, singularly what TB5 makes possible and enables. Our upcoming Thunderbolt 5 Hub will be a great way to let multiple Thunderbolt 40Gb/s devices and/or high-resolution display(s) up to 8K - make maximum usage of the 80/120Gb/s that each Thunderbolt 5 port delivers. Devices today such as our Express 1M2, Thunderblade, and As I think about the Thunderbolt ecosystem today, we have the So... New M4 Pro and Max are here with Thunderbolt 5. The new 'base' M4s have the still very powerful Thunderbolt 40Gb/s. Thunderbolt 3 peripherals work on any Intel Mac with USB-C Thunderbolt, all the way back to 2016. Thunderbolt 4 chipset devices (still same performance as Thunderbolt 3 peripherals, Intel had a TB3 PC Host confusion issue) work on any Mac with Thunderbolt USB-C that run MacOS 11 or later. Thunderbolt 5 peripherals work on any Mac supported for and running MacOS 15 or later. In this way - all your Thunderbolt USB-C devices continue to have purpose, add capability, and interchangeability so long as your Mac has the Thunderbolt USB-C port and the MacOS version needed for different TB release compatibility. We're going to have some great pieces - I forgot about Apple's most significant innovation this past week... Putting the new Mac mini Power button on the underside. No more reach around the corner, it's inconveniently on the bottom of the new Mac mini. That new Mac mini is truly amazing, especially for the M4 Pro capability with Thunderbolt 5 in that new, uber mini profile. I guess that was the only place the power button could fit? Onward and upwards, thank you for reading, and God bless! - OWC Larry P.S. Don't forget to vote... and where applicable, enjoy the extra hour on Sunday. |
