WHAT'S INSIDE

Letter from Alex

I’ve never quite understood Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, which is probably the point because it’s pretty much an exercise in nonsense. Alice follows a white rabbit with a pocket watch through a rabbit hole where a potion shrinks her to the size of a doll then a cake makes her nine-feet-tall and she cries a lake of tears and…

It gets crazier from there. Ever play croquet with a flamingo?

But I’m reading it now with my daughter and it’s resonating for me. Alice becomes totally disoriented—and lots of people (including me) are feeling disoriented by the weather and the world and what not. And sometimes disorientation becomes the norm for a while.

Feeling disoriented can be unsettling in life, but it’s great for stories. For example…

“Cathedral” – a short story by Raymond Carver in which a curmudgeonly guy is thrown off balance when his wife invites an old friend, a blind man, to come stay with them.

Coming to America – a movie in which a pampered prince from Zamunda comes to NYC to search for a bride, posing as a commoner, a classic fish-out-of-water story.

The Year of Magical Thinking – a memoir by Joan Didion in which Joan’s husband of 40 years suddenly passes away, leaving her very much alone.

Think of the really disorienting times in your life, like…

You bring home that baby from the hospital and you’ve got no earthly idea what to do and hopefully it doesn’t turn into a pig like the baby in Wonderland.

You’re driving along and the sky is an eerie pastel shade and the radio tells you to stay away from a certain intersection because a tornado is heading right there and you realize you’re at that very intersection.

You travel to Marrakesh and you’ve been told repeatedly not to let a stranger act as your guide, but you’re wandering through the labyrinthine medina jet-lagged and you do just that and who knows where this guide is leading you?

Yeah, those things happened to me.

What’s really interesting is how your characters handle the disorientation that overtakes them. Do they find themselves drowning, or learn to ride the waves, or discover how to reach a saving shore? Or…something else?

And, hey, we have the perfect contest for these disorienting times: Invent a Word. Words help some of us make sense of things, and we’re giving you permission to add something entirely new to our language. Lewis Carroll was quite good at inventing words. Like galumph.

And as the Mock Turtle in Wonderland says, “Why, if a fish came to me, and told me he was going a journey, I should say ‘With what porpoise?’”

Dear Gotham,

You came into my life during the pandemic, a time when creativity desperately wanted a way out of my brain.

My job as a nutrition education manager at a local food bank was changing, and I wanted to find a way to capture the important conversations I’d had with clients during the classes I’d facilitated.

Meet the Faculty Omari Chancellor

by Samantha Dunne

Gotham Teacher Omari Chancellor is living proof that the writing bug can bite you at any time.

“When you’re a kid, it’s kind of a one-size-fits-all thing. I liked to read, but I don’t think I knew that I was a creative person because I never really had the opportunity to explore that,” he says.

Teacher Excerpt The Moon, Her Crown by Christine Meade

This is an excerpt from Christine Meade's recently
released novel.

***
I stacked the deck of tarot cards between us on the small reading table in Martinique’s Mystics. The girl sitting across from me looked scared. Late-twenties with greasy black hair and this twitchy quality from either a mind-altering substance or fear that someone was following her. She looked to the door for the fifth time and my gaze followed hers. It was one of those rare, hot summer days in San Francisco, and the lack of a fan or air conditioning felt oppressive in the enclosed space.

Letter from Alex There’s an episode of the old Dick Van Dyke show (one of my all-time favorite sitcoms) where Rob (Dick’s character) borrows a friend’s cabin in the woods so he can finally get the time and space to write his novel. He sets up his writing equipment then… He plays paddleball a long while, then tries to fix the slight slant of his writing table, then repairs an old crate to use as a trash basket. When he finds a cowboy hat, holster, and pistols, he can’t resist strutting around like a cowboy and drawing his pistols for a mock quick fire. The groundskeeper stops by, and Rob begs the man to stay and keep him company, but the man escapes, understandably unnerved by this city slicker wearing pistols. The comedy reveals a truth. It’s hard to write and perhaps even harder when you’ve cleared away all excuses not to write. We writers are always grousing that we could do better If only we had the time and space to write. You know what? If you want to write, you can do it perfectly well (maybe better) working within your limitations. Let’s say you only have one hour to write. You can make that hour very productive because you know you’ve got to start and get something done before your time is up. The compressed time-frame forces you to focus. If you can arrange to have an hour a day on a recurring basis, those concentrated hours can add up to plenty of writing—enough to finish a book or script or whatever you’re writing. Yes, a firm schedule is good, but not essential, as you’ll see in this episode (https://blogs.gothamwriters.com/2021/07/08/gotham-writers-thoughtful-thursday-episode-68/?utm_source=Gotham+Writers+Workshop+List&utm_campaign=cc385b2c2c-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2024_12_04&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_77c9799efd-cc385b2c2c-236948188) of my Thoughtful Thursday videos. A helpful trick is to end your writing sessions knowing what you want to pick up with on the next session, perhaps a paragraph or character action you’re eager to tackle. At your next session, you can dive in without requiring lots of warm-up or time figuring out how to begin. Another helpful trick is to think about your work when it’s not your writing time. While you’re walking or driving or exercising or drifting off to sleep. You don’t write actual words at this time, but you ponder your story without any pressure. Things will come to you. Maybe your very best ideas. (In fact, keep a notebook nearby to jot things down.) Not only does this expand your writing time, but it opens your mind to mental wandering and outside influences, both quite valuable. In the sitcom episode, Rob finally realizes that when he’s ready to write his novel, “I’ll be able to write it on a subway during rush hour.” 6ce400c0-fd7d-4f45-900d-265919084928.png Alex Steele President, Gotham Writers Workshop e9f82235-0631-4595-a814-be3402d9c694.png Upcoming Classes(August 2021) Summer Schedule (https://www.writingclasses.com/classes/index?utm_source=Gotham+Writers+Workshop+List&utm_campaign=cc385b2c2c-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2024_12_04&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_77c9799efd-cc385b2c2c-236948188) available for Zoom and Online classes. In this pair of novellas, award-winning author Scott Alexander Hess provides a richly textured portrait of the shifting landscape of the 20th century American Dream. The Root of Everything is a multi-generational saga tracking fathers and sons from Germany’s Black Forest to Missouri as they experience tragedy, triumph, forbidden love, and hard-earned reckonings. In Lightning, a young man in Fayetteville, Arkansas in 1918 is driven by his deep love for horses and his emerging feelings for another man. Offered a chance to move to New York City, he finds his true destiny. https://www.writingclasses.com/faculty/excerpt/the-root-of-everything-lightning?utm_source=Gotham+Writers+Workshop+List&utm_campaign=cc385b2c2c-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2024_12_04&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_77c9799efd-cc385b2c2c-236948188 ** Gotham Writers Workshop (http://www.gothamwriters.com?utm_source=Gotham+Writers+Workshop+List&utm_campaign=cc385b2c2c-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2024_12_04&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_77c9799efd-cc385b2c2c-236948188) Gotham Writers Workshop ** gothamwriters.com (http://www.gothamwriters.com?utm_source=Gotham+Writers+Workshop+List&utm_campaign=cc385b2c2c-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2024_12_04&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_77c9799efd-cc385b2c2c-236948188) Customer Service 212-974-8377 ** contact@gothamwriters.com (mailto:contact@gothamwriters.com) ** Gotham Writers Workshop on Twitter (https://twitter.com/gothamwriters?utm_source=Gotham+Writers+Workshop+List&utm_campaign=cc385b2c2c-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2024_12_04&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_77c9799efd-cc385b2c2c-236948188) ** Gotham Writers Workshop on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/GothamWritersWorkshop?utm_source=Gotham+Writers+Workshop+List&utm_campaign=cc385b2c2c-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2024_12_04&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_77c9799efd-cc385b2c2c-236948188) ** Gotham Writers Workshop on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/gothamwriters/?utm_source=Gotham+Writers+Workshop+List&utm_campaign=cc385b2c2c-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2024_12_04&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_77c9799efd-cc385b2c2c-236948188) ** Follow us on Linked In (https://www.linkedin.com/company/484091?utm_source=Gotham+Writers+Workshop+List&utm_campaign=cc385b2c2c-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2024_12_04&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_77c9799efd-cc385b2c2c-236948188) ** Unsubscribe / Preferences (https://gothamwriters.us2.list-manage.com/profile?u=6b49631c644f0c47d002127ee&id=77c9799efd&e=aba0d56579&c=cc385b2c2c) Copyright © 2024 Gotham Writers Workshop, All rights reserved.
