FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2024
Riverside, Riverside, Riverside.
In my new book, we have a chapter about pruning. When taking the scissors to Olive Trees, it’s important to prune the center of the tree so that sunlight can reach the core. Next week we have another chance for the light to reach the center, and as any good gardener, we must begin by focusing on our own backyard.
I hear many of my friends, including the staff at Flamingo, say they are not voting because California is basically decided. But they couldn’t be further from the truth. As George Jean Nathan once wrote, "Bad officials are elected by good citizens who don't vote." In this election, these words hit particularly hard.
Prop 4
My wonderful friend Shawn Sweeney, who works for Dr. Jane Goodall, reminded me to vote for Mother Nature, and each other: affirming gay marriage (YES on Proposition 3) and banning slavery in the State of California (YES on Proposition 6). Statewide, we can also cast a vote for our planet with Proposition 4, which would take direct action towards climate change.
Prop 6
Proposition 4 proposes a $10 billion investment in clean energy, wildfire prevention, water conservation, and climate resilience. By voting yes, Californians can tackle climate change at a community level, prevent catastrophic wildfires, and create safer, more sustainable neighborhoods. These local votes are the ones that build our state’s resilience and environmental future.
Prop 3
None of the work we do, and none of the produce we consume here in our state, would be possible without our farm workers. They are the backbone of California — feeding the entire country. The United Farm Worker Labour Union publicized its support for the Harris Campaign. There is so much at stake for them in this election, and we owe it to them to show up and vote. Our Farm Box this week is a tribute to them.
But we also cannot forget that there are some incredibly important state and local elections on the ballot this year (and every election season) as well.
A short drive from Flamingo is Riverside County, where Will Rollins, a former federal prosecutor who focused on counterterrorism and counterintelligence cases in Southern California, is running for a seat in the House of Representatives. His win would help towards flipping the House of Representatives (and he would also be the third openly gay member of Congress). His campaign is particularly important, and I encourage our neighbors in Riverside County to get informed and do the research. And VOTE.
In our own suburb here in Highland Park, CA we have Ysabel Jurado — a rights attorney, affordable housing activist, single mom, daughter of undocumented Filipino immigrants & lifelong Angeleno. She is running to become the next Council member for District 14, and the race is tight.

My friends have also been a profound example of what it means to show up. John Legend had a beautiful, powerful performance at the rally in Philadelphia Monday night. Chrissy Teigen has been doing interview after interview, sharing her personal stories and advocating fearlessly for a woman’s right to choose. Our sweet Jane Goddall is ferociously using her platform to remind us that despite being fed up with the politics of this all, we should ALWAYS cast a vote for nature. And Jane Fonda, who’s been campaigning feverishly for down-ballot races and calling out the candidates who’ve taken donations from big oil. Jane’s climate PAC has compiled a list of candidates, many in California, who she endorses for their policies and practices. You can find it here.

Like the Olive Tree, let’s let in the light. And as always, cook a meal for someone you love.
